Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the care of infants and children and the treatment of their diseases. Pediatrics is a specialized area of medicine and when a young life, with everything to offer the world, is jeopardized by negligence all resources should be brought to bear in order to ensure the same negligence is not perpetrated on other unsuspecting children and their families.
Children are not little adults — their medical problems are often complicated by their immature vital organs that makes infants and children especially sensitive to what otherwise might be benign in the adult. Physicians need to be acutely aware that infants and children often do things not expected of adults — like swallowing a small toy or ingesting cleaning liquid. Failure to make accurate diagnosis, failure to adequately test and failure to adequately treat infants and children are just a few of the areas that negligence can raise its ugly head.
